Arguably some of the best parts of learning a new language is the funny or unique words that exist in other cultures. Consider the Swedish word “fika,” for instance. In English, there is no direct translation, but it basically means “to have coffee, cake and a good chat.” It’s not some fast coffee run it’s a social rite. It’s the gathering kind of day when people come together to slow down, put distance between them and the busyness of their day, to sit and sip some coffee and indulge in something sweet. One Swedish word we think should go worldwide is definitely this one.
Fika is not simply a moment to pick up a coffee it’s a cultural gathering that’s deeply enmeshed in Swedish culture. Be it an office catchup or a leisurely afternoon session with friends, fika is about carving time out in the day to connect. It’s as if you’re temporarily hitting the pause button on the hustle and bustle of life and sharpening in on the simple pleasures. However, it is hard to overstate how important fika is in Sweden during this tradition, you want to slow down and appreciate the small, joyful moments in life.
So why doesn’t every culture have a word for something like fika? It’s a beautiful way to connect people and create interactions. With the breakneck pace of life in many parts of the world, fika seems a refreshing reminder to do just that: take a breather, slow down and enjoy life’s little pleasures. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all made a little more time for fika? It could just make the world a touch sweeter.
18. Sweden’s Cozy Prisons
What if I told you that some prisons in Sweden resemble comfy college dorms rather than confinement facilities? It’s true! Look at one of their more notorious prisons, and you may be surprised at a room that comes equipped with a twin bed, bookshelves and yes computer screens. It’s incredible it’s almost like they want inmates to be comfortable when they’re serving time.
This raises interesting questions regarding the dichotomy of rehabilitation versus punishment. Imagine how a more humane prison might affect recidivism rates wouldn’t that be interesting? It’s a bold move, and it definitely questions our conventional ideas of what prisons should look like.

19. Icehotel- A Chill Experience
The next place on the list is the Icehotel and trust me, it’s not your typical lodge. Now this place really is made of ice! Imagine entering a hotel that is an art installation, made of snow and ice. It’s like entering a winter wonderland, but with all the luster of a fine hotel.
If a night’s stay in a room that resembles a throne room for an ice king doesn’t sound like a once in a lifetime trip, we don’t know what does. You’d be surrounded by artistic ice sculptures and chill decor. It’s certainly not your typical hotel stay, but how cool would it be to tell friends you slept in a room that’s made entirely of ice?

Yes, you read that correctly a personalized sign guarantees that Santa’s sleigh will never be short on parking space. But it’s not only the sign that’s festive. The site is outfitted with holiday landing lights, making the space appear magical, which is just right for the big guy in red. Can you believe that would be the first thing you see pulling into the parking lot? So much for that whole idea of “special treatment.”
That IKEA has decided to pay tribute to Santa Claus in this way simply speaks to how ingrained Christmas traditions are in Sweden. You don’t see a store so playful and whimsical, in its homage to the holiday season, every day. In a world so often driven by practicality, it’s nice to see a bit of magic enter the conversation. And admit it, who doesn’t need a little whimsy in their lives?
What’s so funny is it’s not just any parking spot, but the best place for a sleigh to land! Think of all the planning behind making sure that Santa’s arrival would be smooth and simple. There is nothing like IKEA to marry function with fun, while still maintaining the holiday spirit. But how fun would it be to pull into your local IKEA and learn Santa’s actually stopping there?
22. The Wall of Kindness In Stockholm
In Stockholm, there’s a lovely initiative called the “Wall of Kindness.” The idea is simple: anyone who wants can hang coats on a wall for anyone who needs to take.” How beautiful is that? It’s a simple but effective way to keep warm if the months are cold. By donating to a cause, you are actually able to see your generosity in action, as opposed to sending a simple payment to a charity fund.

24. Trees Text When They’re Thirsty
Crazy enough, trees are actually capable of sending text messages. They have no thumbs and they have no phones, but in Sweden, they can text you when they’re running low on water. How? They had moisture sensors in the trees. It’s almost as if they have their own call for help!
These sensors monitor the trees’ water levels and send reports on how thirsty they are and where they are located. It’s pretty clever, right? Imagine receiving a text from a tree saying “Hey, I’m a little dry over here!” It both assists people in tending to the trees and ensures that they receive the water they need.
Greatg, but also kind of weird. Trees have existed for eons without requiring humans to come check in on them, and now they’re texting us! It’s kind of a creepy way, but it’s a good way to preserve nature.” Who knows, next our plants will be texting us!”

Sweden is Known for its stunning natural scenery, Sweden is also home to one of the most dazzling sights you’ll ever see: the Northern Lights. I feel how fortunate it is to wake up or go to sleep under this enchanting glow. It’s difficult to envision a more picturesque setting for your daily life this is the type of spot that makes feel as though you’re living inside a fairy tale.
For anyone who appreciates the concept of connecting with nature but also likes the comfort and convenience of home, Luleå might be just the place. No need to hike out into the wilderness for a view like that. The Northern Lights are practically part and parcel of the town’s allure, and living beneath such a wondrous sky all day, each day, must feel nothing short of extraordinary.
